The Best Workouts for Girls to Look Slim, but Not Muscular

By Timothy Owens Updated April 29, 2019

You may be worried that a new workout routine will "muscle you up," and you'll lose some of your figure and femininity, but those fears are unfounded. Developing large muscles and a muscular body takes much more than hitting the gym a couple times a week and occasionally eating a salad, so don’t worry about beefing up. Instead, work out with the confidence that circuit training and cardio will keep you slim and toned.

Bust the Muscular Myth

Despite what you may think, developing the bodybuilder’s muscular look is a long and challenging process. You won’t get big in a matter of weeks just because you hit the gym every day and go heavy on squats and chest presses. The bodybuilder look takes several years to develop with strict attention to training and a clean diet. If you are working for the slim look and want to avoid the extremely muscular body, it will not happen without years of training and a strict diet.

Get Sexy and Toned Muscles

Keeping toned muscles requires resistance training with a circuit-training-based routine. Aim to do your weight-training routine two times per week on non-consecutive days. Use a repetition range of eight to 12 reps with one set per major muscle group. Working out in this manner will keep your muscles toned without building excessive muscle mass. With 30-second rest periods between each exercise, circuit training keeps your heart rate elevated, giving you a cardiovascular workout to burn calories and ultimately fat if a calorie deficit is reached, allowing more visibility of your toned muscles.

Try The Slim Circuit

Ideally, your weight-training routine should develop your body overall for a slim, toned, healthy look from head to toe. Your circuit-training routine should include every major muscle group, from largest to smallest, for speeding you along to your goal. Train the large muscles of your legs, upper back and chest with the leg press, lat pulldown and chest press before moving to smaller muscle groups. Small muscle group exercises should include shoulder press, triceps extension, biceps curl, abdominal crunch and low-back extension.

Look Slim in the Mirror

For the slim look, you want to reduce your body fat percentage enough that when you look in the mirror, you can see the outline of your muscles. For knocking your body fat down a couple notches, try picking up three to four days of cardio per week. Any type of cardio is acceptable — elliptical machine, running outside, step aerobics classes — as long as you are exercising for 150-minutes per week at a vigorous intensity. To exercise at vigorous-intensity, exercise at a pace which allows you only to say a few words before pausing for breath. To burn fat, you must create a daily calorie deficit, which means you need to burn more calories than you consume.
